The lives of many saints are celebrated on the date of their death. Today is an exception because the life of Saint Pope John XXIII is marked on the date he called the Second Vatican Council (11 Oct 1962). The Council opened a path of dialogue for the Church and the world and called all its people to be aware of their baptismal calling.
He was born, Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli, in Soto il Monto - a small village, in Lombardy, near Bergamo in northern Italy. He was ordained priest in 1904. He served as Pope from 1958 to 1963. He surprised many by calling the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) but did not live to see it to completion.
In 2000 he was beatified by Pope John Paul II. In 2014 he and John Paul II were canonized on the same day.
St John XXIII, pray for us ๐๐ป

Unfortunately, our much admired sycamore tree is showing signs of dying and decay ๐ข. This was confirmed this week by the County Council arborist who highlighted the shoots coming from the base and die off in the higher branches. This means that for safety reasons the tree will have to be removed.
The good news though is that @antaisce have sourced a semi mature native Irish Oak to replace it. This will add to the biodiversity of the front of school area and provide homes for insects and birds, as well as shelter and clean air for us. As it grows and matures, children in the school will be able to remember when it was planted, and hopefully collect acorns from its branches in years to come.
