 Abbey Seals Dublin Lions 67. Cobh 58 Cobh’s participation in this year’s Basketball Ireland U20 National Cup came to an end yesterday in Clondalkin, when we lost to a strong Dublin Lions team. The game was effectively decided in the opening quarter with Dublin Lions quick out of the blocks. Cobh struggled to match the early intensity of the Dublin team and were beaten too easily off the dribble, creating scoring chances for the home side. Thankfully, our three point shooting was of a high standard and two 3-pointers from Dara Diggin and another from Orlaith Finn kept us in the game in the first quarter. Unfortunately, Zara Smith picked up some fouls while helping stop drives to the basket and this necessitated the introduction of 16 year old Sarahrose Walsh. Sarahrose did an excellent job in guarding one of Lions taller players. Baskets from Eimear Diggin and Amy Morrissey kept us within 10 points. However we trained 25–17 at the end of the quarter. The second quarter was a much closer affair with Cobh showing a big improvement on defence. Anna Ring did an incredible job defending one of the Dublin Lions guards and had a superb defensive game. Amy Duggan got Cobh’s first basket of the quarter and this was followed by another three pointer from Orlaith and three free throws from Amy and Dara. Cobh trailed 34-25 at half time. The third quarter was without doubt Cobh’s best quarter of the game. The girls showed great character and intensity in their efforts to cut into the Dublin Lion’s lead. At one point, we had reduced the lead to the minimum but couldn’t quite get our noses in front. Amy D was putting great pressure on the ball and this lead to some fast break opportunities. Six points each from Amy D and Dara, another three pointer from Orlaith and a basket from Amy M saw Cobh score 16 points in the quarter and narrow the lead to 3 points at the end of the quarter. Cobh trailed 45-42 at this point. A poor start by Cobh to the last quarter saw Dublin Lions re-establish control of the game. It was understandable that we would tire after the efforts of the third quarter and as hard as we tried, we could never get quite close enough to make them nervous in front of their home crowd. Another two 3-pointers from Dara were added to by baskets from Amy D, Eimear and a Mia Tarrant three pointer to give us another 16 point quarter but 22 points from the Lions saw them close out the game and record a 67–58 victory. Lucy O’Shea was introduced in this quarter and showed remarkable composure for a 16-year-old in her minutes. It was a pity we had to meet Dublin Lions this early in the season. For most of the team, it was only their third game of the season and we were sluggish at the start, with the lack of games an undoubted contributory factor. It’s never easy either playing a game after a long journey. On the plus side, scoring ten 3-pointers was remarkable with Dara hitting six of these. Also, the response after a poor start was typical of the never say die attitude of the girls. Next up is a home Premier game in the CLBB league v Fr Mathews. Tip off next Saturday is at 20:15 and this will be a tough test against a strong Mathews team.
