Pirates J1 squad made the journey east to the Waterford Tipperary border yesterday, to take on Carrick on Suir. Both teams sat on equal points mid table, so this fixture was important for both sides.
Taking the game by the scruff from the off Pirates were first to score, a line out was followed by a strong run by “Halla”, setting up a ruck in the center of the field 20 meters out. Storm Le Roux ran a strong line to break through, the swirling wind denying Rory Pierce his first conversion attempt of the day. Pierce was to amend his miss only 5 minutes later, adding 3 points to bring Pirates 8 points to the fore. The home side replied with their own penalty soon after, 8.3.
At the end of 1st quarter, Alex Mulligan found some space to stretch his legs up the middle of the pitch, with Ben Kennedy in support to touch down for Pirates 2nd try, Pierce slotting over the 2 points. Carrick added their second 3 pointer on the half hour mark, the remaining 10 minutes of the half saw the Pirates scrum dominate with some great work by the forward pack.
Rory Pierce and Jack Worrall were coming more into the game of their wings, with Pierce making a fine break, a deemed infringement halting the play just short of the Carrick line.
With 2 minutes to go in the opening half, runs by Cian Ahern and Fitzy offered a ruck 25 meters out. The ever-busy Kev Murphy saw the gap he needed for a pick and go to get over the line, Pierce hitting the upright with the conversion attempt. Half time and Pirates were 20.6 in front.
Carrick rallied in the second half, with some strong defense by Pirates in the open play and set pieces holding firm. Cian Ahern made a super 40m clearance down the tram lines after one such attach to bring the play to the halfway line. From this line out Carrick set up another attack, where they were awarded with a penalty attempt and brought the score back to 20.9 with just over 10 minutes gone in the 2nd half.
The back line was to link up yet again, with multiple hands and yards gained to get George Rasmussen over in the corner for the 4th try. Pierce stepped up to slot over the 2 points from the sideline, only to have to re take the kick, which he did and slotted it a 2nd time bringing the score to 27-9.
The remaining 15 minutes saw both sides launch multiple attacks in open play, though none were to affect the final score, 27.9 to Pirates.
Next weekend we welcome Fermoy to the Paddocks in the next round of the Junior league group B.
What we do....
Inside this year's publication you will find a list of the local organisations/charities who received a donation from the proceeds of "The Cobh Chronicle"
Through the help of our advertisers and sales of the publication we were delighted to help the many groups that do fantastic work around our town.
Hopefully we will be in a position to do likewise again early in 2023.
Thank you to all for the support and also to the local retailers who sell copies on our behalf....👏👏

Huge thanks to the editorial team in The Cobh Chronicle for their donation to Cobh Tidy Towns project at the Cobh Garden of Reflection at Cobh Parish. A wonderful publication a copy of which deserves a place in every home in Cobh so we remember and keep telling stories of those who have gone before us and those who continue building our community in Cobh.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for a lovely evening in Cobh Heritage Center as we launched this year's publication.
It was a lovely few hours and thank you once again to our advertisers and contributors in helping us once again a fantastic publication and to everyone who braved the bad weather to attend.
Thank you also to Cobh, The Queenstown Story at Cobh Heritage Centre for the lovely setting.
Missing this evening was Anne Mc Sweeney who we wish a speedy recovery from a recent illness.

I would urge Cobh Tourism, Harbour Chamber etc to promote the use of Xplore local App and Cobh App Facebook page to promote the town and the Great island. The App can be downloaded on Apple or Google. Just type in Xplore Local and you have a choice of selecting 20 towns and choose Cobh. It has over 100 listings and there is no need to be on other social media platforms and its totally free. Thanks to Cobh Credit Union who contributed €5,000 of the €10,000 to set up all the listings and I contributed the other €5,000. I put at least 2 hours everyday into compiling and updating the news usually more than 10 stories and the record for a day is 28. If you want to send news or info just email me at liamkelleher44@gmail.com Since the news has been updated every day in a very readable form. All people have to do is email news pictures etc liamkelleher44@gmail.com. I am grateful to all the organisations, clubs, schools etc for allowing me to use their social media outlets, so much appreciated since i lost the use of Cobh News, which I was delighted to bring you the news in print form every 2 weeks when i published the magazine.
After a lot of hard work, there has been a massive improvement in the numbers checking it out. This is so uplifting since I ceased the publication every 2 weeks of Cobh News. Thanks to everyone who has made this possible and tell all your friends about the App. its for everybody on the Graet Island benefit and its an indication of the commitment i have since i retired from ministry in the parish..
