<p>We were delighted recently to be asked to support one of Cobh's growing pool of sporting talent, Amy Duggan of Cobh Basketball Club .  Amy was recently chosen to represent her Club and Country at the upcoming U18 European Championships in Bulgaria.</p>

<p>Our long standing member JOHN BARRY who was on umpire duty at Croke Park yesterday for the All Ireland Senior Hurling Final between Limerick and Kilkenny!</p>

<p>Amazing day on Sunday despite being very tired,  from traveling and a late night to bed at the Travellers inn at the exorbitant cost of €320 without breakfast. I tuned into RTÉ radio to listen to the Limerick v Kilkenny riveting final. Then waited forhalf an hour to get a taxi to St Mary's for Sunday mass. It had started when I arrived. After mass there was a very welcome breakfast courtesy of the  Knights of Columbanus. I was eager to get the WiFi password to check up how Rory McIlroy had done, he had been leading when I went to msss. The lady who gave me the code Alexandra,  recognized my Irish accent and said she had good friend from Ireland Clodagh Thompson and she sent her a txt and she replied that she knew me as a well known coach and photographer. She rang her and I  found that her maiden name was Kelleher who had competed with Ovens AC. and was on the National cycling squad. She now works as a Physio at the University and right away she invited me to her home. She went to the church to collect me and I collected my bag at the Travelers Inn. Then went to the morning session on the track which featured the 2 Irish 400m runners. Sophie Becker and Rhasidat Adeleke who had a brilliant major championship debut in finishing 2nd, pity she did not get an opportunity to gain valuable experience when controversially left out of the last Olympics. She has found what could be her best event and would appear to have a better major medal opportunity, with the standards so high in the 100 and 200m.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The rest of the morning programme was very entertaining especially the high jump in the heptathlon. The morning finished with a cracking 10,000m men's final another new experience for me taking place away from an evening session. The race was a thriller from the get go with a virtual single file formation for the first half of the race and nobody dropped by the halfway mark. Apart from a few,  all wore distinctive brightly coloured yellow shoes. At least 10 were in contention with 1,500m to go but the final dustup did not not happen until the last 800n was left. Three lapped runners caused confusion and must have affected the leader's but the finish saw the pair from Uganda taking gold and bronze, with a Kenyan taking silver. Grant Fisher USA was just edged out of the medals. Then I came back with Clodagh her husband Dave and children Conor and Anica who is a student at university of Oregon finished  her first year and is on roster for track and cross-country. Another daughter Ciaragh is at Washington State university and presently is doing Summer work at the Ovens bar in Cork. After a relaxing afternoon it was back to the track for another fascinating evening athletics. Irish interest focused on Thomas Barr 400m hurdles and Andrew Coscoran in the 1,500. Andrew who had brilliant run the day before had nothing left in tank and faded on the last lap, he needs more experience at this level for back to back championship races. No doubt his dedicated coach Feidhlim Kelly will have taken note and provide the opportunities to correct this for future occasions, for this exciting prospect.</p>
<p>The reminder of the evening saw the women's pole vault reach an exciting conclusion with USA taking first and 2nd, Magoette winning from teammate Morris, who suffered her first loss of the season. There was a like experience in the men's shot putt final. American's took all medals with gold going to Kovacs the defending champion, silver to Crouser and a surprise bronze for Awotunde edging out Walsh of New Zealand.</p>
<p>The final of the 110m hurdles started with controversy, one of the Americas,  Devon Allen was adjudged to have a false start,  the limit is .1 of a second he was .99. It was upheld and since then controversy has been raging. Grant Holloway retained  his title for the USA.</p>
<p>The final event the ladies 100m final saw another clean sweep this time for the colourful Jamaicans.  Gold went to Fraser-Pryce, for the 5th time ,edging Shericka Jackson with Thompson-Herah 3rd. It was a hairaising experience for the captivated audience with the hair does of many colours. On the way out I met Robert Heffernan still on a high after coaching the bronze medallist in the 20k walk  Karlstrom who was disqualified from gold after winning the Irish title a few weeks ago.</p>
