History was made at the Steven Ireland Astro turf on Saturday evening when Cobh Ramblers under 17's made their debut in League of Ireland competition for the very first time.
&nbsp;They must have approached the game with a certain amount of trepidation, but it was evident from the opening 15 minutes that they were going toe to toe with Bray Wanderers, in fact mid way through the half they delighted their sizable home support, by taking the lead through Aine Griffin. Unfortunately it was short lived and within two minutes the visitors were level and things remained so until the interval. Cobh took the lead early in the 2nd half from the penalty spot from the boot of Muireann Deasy and they defended it bravely until 10 minutes from the end and in the blink of an eye, they were hit with a double whammy of 2 goals. Throwing caution to the wind they bombarded the visitors goal, but an equalizing goal, which would have brought huge joy, did not arrive. Nevertheless this very young squad were delighted that their maiden visit to the National stage, and it was one for the memory bank despite the outcome. Management were immensely proud of their changes and when I spoke to their manager Aoife O'Brien, after the game, she was looking forward to the trip to Galway next weekend. To complete at this level the net was cast a bit wider to strengthen the squad and be competitive. The 3 Cobh girls who honed their skills with Springfield, made a huge contribution. Aine Sheridan was rock solid at the back and showed some lovely touches, her running ability got her out of trouble, when she had to track back after going too far forward which did not happen too often. Up front Rosie Speakman, showed some excellent touches and came in at times for some hard robust tackles. Aine Griffin took her goal with aplomb and will be remembered for that feat, when history will be written. Of the others there were some very skillful players and none impressed more than Kelsey Cooper, who showed some deft touches. So all in all there is much to ponder and even more to look forward to. One young lady is faced with a dilemma, Aine Sheridan has qualified for her school, Colaiste Muire for the All-Ireland schools xcountry in Belfast on Saturday next, but she had no team to back her up, so that should ease her dilemma, because the Galway game is on the same day and my thoughts on the matter, which I have encountered many times, when there is a clash, the team comes before the individual. I have had a big interest in Xcountry for over 50 years, convinced it is a huge help to sports people in whatever sport they concentrate on. I hope to be in Belfast on Saturday to relive memories of the many teams successes I was involved with in the past. Good luck to the girls in Galway.&nbsp;

Scene before the under 12 , National cup Springfield Ramblers v St Kevin's Dublin at Stephen Ireland astra turf. The Cobh boys while going down 3-0 showed huge character against what is regarded as the top underage outfit in Ireland. Well done to all.

A glorious morning at Pat O Brien Park saw the Cobh men win convincingly against their promotion rivals and make it 8 league wins from 9. More pleasing than the result was the performance and work rate of the entire team for the entire 90 minutes.&nbsp;
The game began at a frantic pace with both teams looking to impose their will. It took 8 minutes for Doma to create the first chance of the game by beating two opposing players comfortably and laying it off for Geasley who had his effort cleared off the goal line. The ball returned to Geasley again and his effort just went wide of the post.&nbsp;
The first 15 minutes saw Kevin Wilmot breaking up the play and picking the ball off the opposition almost N’Golo Kante-like, with Wilmots play only being outshone by Domagoj Micklewsevic who was pulling the strings throughout the pitch.&nbsp;
Wilmots CM partner James Stoat burst into life in the 15th minute when he drove through the centre of the pitch (which became a common theme throughout the game) and won three 50/50 battles with the opposing defenders before fainting to the left of the onrushing goalkeeper and chipped it over him like Michael Owen versus Argentina to see Springfield take the lead.&nbsp;
The interlink play in the first 25 minutes from the final third was extremely impressive with Doma, Stoat, Geasley and Wilmot all on the same page as well as serious running in behind by wingers Britton and McDermott.
Stoat’s burst through the middle again on 27min saw him beat two players with his blistering pace and his unselfish squaring of the ball to Doma saw him finish with the easiest of tap in’s, however he was ruled to have been in an offside position.&nbsp;
The second goal was coming and the Cobh men got what they deserved on 35min where again James Stoats central burst saw him again come face to face with the keeper with the later pulling off a great save, however the looping rebound fell to the back post where Shane Geasley went 50/50 with the full paced recovering goalkeeper but finished into the corner whilst also taking a big hit in tandem.&nbsp;
Greenwood started to really pile on the pressure in the last 10 minutes of the half with the phenomenal back 5 performance of Burns, Downing, Kearney and the Keating centre back pairing (no relation, that we know of!) withstanding all that pressure. Not only did the back line repel the pressure but they also proceeded to be composed in passing the ball to feet as opposed to booting the ball into touch.&nbsp;
Greenwood pulled a goal back 5 mins before the break where Wilmot was adjudged to have taken down the Greenwood striker just inside the box. The same player took the penalty and Burns was very unlucky not to get a stronger hand to it.&nbsp;
It looked to be going in to half time at 2-1 until the slick passing ended up with Geasley thundering a shot from outside the box where the goalkeeper again saved but resulted in a looping rebound which Geasley again won whilst being again clattered in the process. Geasleys second goal was his 14th goal in 11 league games. Ex Springfield strikers such as O’Flynn, Hawes, Brennan, McCarthy and Davin O’Neill etc would be seriously impressed with that output! It was good to see the later two former players in attendance this morning.
Besides Geasleys cross bar hitting free kick at 48mins the game was much more of a tighter affair with Springfield sticking to their game plan of playing ball at all costs. The defence withstood more pressure but it wasn’t until the 75th minute that Man of the Match Domagoj Micklewsevic got the goal he truly deserved by cutting in to the edge of the box and drilling a powerful left footed shot into the bottom left hand corner.&nbsp;
The last kick of the game was a switched ball to just beyond the half way line to the seriously impressive Jamie Britton where he sprinted into a one on one with the onrushing goalkeeper and put it between his legs to finish the game on a high note.
Springfield go top of the league outright this weekend with 5 huge games to play to achieve the ultimate goal of promotion to the AUL Premier League.&nbsp;

UNDER 15 basketball Championship

Having defeated Youghal All Stars in the quarter final, Cobh U15 Boys met Cork club Neptune in the semi final of the U15 championship.&nbsp;
Neptune were quick out of the blocks and with Dylan O’Rourke in excellent form they quickly established an early lead. Leo Morris and Joe O’Connell did their best to keep Cobh in touch but they trailed 21-06 at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter was a much tighter affair. With Charlie Dennehy and Conor Leahy doing well on the defensive boards, Cobh gave as good as they got in the quarter. A free throw by Jack Perryman was added to with a three pointer from Joe and baskets from Leo and Charlie. A free throw from Cian Gilmartin completed the quarter scoring.&nbsp;
As hard as they tried Cobh couldn’t make inroads into the Neptune lead and the third quarter saw Neptune extend their lead through good play from O’Rourke, Justin Raheem and Wesley Delaney. Charlie, Joe and Leo kept the Cobh score ticking over while Adam Cox, Cian Gilmartin and Rossa Bovey Ryan were working hard to keep the game alive.&nbsp;
Cobh were excellent in the fourth quarter and matched Neptune basket for basket. A 15-14 quarter was the reward for a great last quarter. While defeat saw Cobh’s interest in the championship come to an end, the boys showed they were capable of competing at the highest level and the coaches were justifiably pleased with the performance.&nbsp;

We appreciate the hard work undertaken by the Community Service placement of the Probation Service, supervised by Paul Butler around the Titanic Memorial Garden over the past few weeks. Mechanically strimming kerbside weeds, strimming the vegetation on the large sloped bank, burying the edges of the weed control material under the gravel and spreading more gravel in the lower section of the Fort.
