Transition Year students were busy learning important first aid skills again last week. They covered bleeding, signs of a stroke, heart attacks, choking, CPR, seizures, and anaphylaxis asthma to name a few.
Medical emergencies like those listed above happen all the time and we are never sure when they will occur.&nbsp;
The Irish Red Cross trains groups in the skills necessary to recognise and provide first aid training for injuries and sudden illness until medical personnel arrive and take over. Vital skills for us all to have.&nbsp;
Thank you to Karen and Mr. Buckley for facilitating this training for the remainder of as our TY students.&nbsp;

We are thrilled to be celebrating Autism Awareness this week at Bunscoil Rinn an Chabhlaigh!
Over the week, our students will be taking part in lots of fun learning activities relating to Autism and we will be sharing these moments with you through our social media!
We will also be exploring some of our school children's favourite quotes about Autism each day this week!
Today, they have selected, "Children with Autism are beautiful - They are often very beautiful and like the rainbow, they stand out!"&nbsp;

A lovely interview with Cobh Pirates RFC lock and past pupil, Edwin Edogbo who joined the Greencore Munster Rugby Academy as a 19-year-old in November 2021. Edwin is the first player from our local rugby club to earn a place in the Academy.
Currently sidelined with an achilles tendon injury, Edwin has lined out for UCC in the AIL and studies engineering at the university.
<h3>&nbsp;Junior win for Pirates over Mitchelstown</h3>

On a Sun drenched Sunday afternoon, the Juniors headed over Belvelly bridge to south of the Galtee Mountains for their penultimate Munster Junior League fixture against Mitchelstown Rugby Club
With 2 games to go Pirates had it in their own hands to top the league table when the curtain falls on this year’s campaign.&nbsp;
However, it was evident from the start that the home team, playing their last fixture, were determined to finish on a high. The defense for Storm Le Roux, Aaron OFlynn and Ben Kennedy with some stand out tackles kept the home attack at bay.&nbsp;
Just as the 1st water break dawned, Mitchelstown availed of a penalty opportunity to get the first 3 points of the day on the scoreboard. Soon after the restart, Captain Ian Jones found his legs, only the sideline coming to the home sides rescue shy of the line. The return volley from the home side saw them get into the Pirates 22, and a quick pick and go got them over the line for the games opening try, the conversion being the last score of the opening half.&nbsp;
The second half resumed with Pirates retaining more possession for the opening 10 minutes, allowing Storm to cross for Pirates first try. The score being the result of a number of phases with Storm cutting back against the defense to give fullback Rory Pierce a kickable conversion and add to the 5 points. Pierce was not done with the conversion and minutes later broke clear up the flank setting up a strong attack. The support secured possession, moving the ball uphill to the opposite wing when the sideline prevented the Pirates 2nd try. The water break, although halted momentum, was welcomed by some at least, before play resumed and into the last quarter of the game.&nbsp;
Pirates started to get the upper hand and build phases, the home side holding out with some valor like defending. With 5 minutes left on the clock, the ever-busy Kevin Murphy was first to react to a Pirates penalty and took it quickly, Pierce quickly adding the 2 points to put Pirates in front for the first time. Into injury time and Pirates had their tails up.&nbsp;
A scrum allowed Murphy to present Cian Ahern with ball in space, throwing the dummy before cutting back inside to cut the defense and score a fantastic individual try. Pierce was not hanging around this time, his quick drop conversion hitting the upright. 19-10 on the board with the final minutes of added time ticking down.&nbsp;
Mitchelstown launched an attack, a loose ball gathered by Pierce. Stretching his legs, he found Ahern in support how was brought down on the home sides 22-yard line. Twinkle toes McDowall was in support taking a quick pop and a number of the home defenders with him, Ben Kennedy on his laces to follow on from Redsers run and crash over for the all-important 4th try, Pierce adding the final touch to bring the score to 26-10.&nbsp;
Our final game sees us heading East to the The Déise taking on Waterford City Rugby Club this coming Sunday.&nbsp;

Last week Cobh hit a record with the number of dog poo bags refilled in the dispensers around town for one week. Jim reports that 4500 bags were replaced for dog owners to use. 💩🐩

Our Under 14 girls competed in the Basketball Ireland All Ireland Club Championship (AICCL over the weekend in Gormanston. We competed in the A division and were drawn against Kilkenny Stars, Tolka Rovers and Saint Pauls, Killarney.&nbsp;
In our opening game against Kilkenny, we had a great start and lead at the end of the first quarter, 17-04. However a poor second quarter saw Kilkenny come back into the game and take a halftime lead of three points.
Two baskets from Lucy Walsh were added to by Lucy Sheridan and Francesca Kyamagero to give Cobh a one-point lead at the end of the third quarter. Cobh lead 26-25.&nbsp;
The last quarter was similarly close. The teams were tied with 40 seconds remaining until a free throw by Maebh Deavy gave Cobh a one-point lead. Kilkenny equalised when a retaken free-throw saw the game head to overtime on a scoreline of 33-33.&nbsp;
Kilkenny scored three quick baskets at the start of overtime to lead by six. Baskets from Lucy and Isabelle Bardsley narrowed the gap to 2 points but a late basket gave Kilkenny the victory by 41-37.&nbsp;
Our second game saw us come up against Tolka Rovers. A low scoring first quarter saw Cobh trail by 6–3. The second quarter was also low scoring with a single basket by Francesca being Cobh’s only score of the quarter and we trailed 12-5 at halftime.&nbsp;
The third quarter saw an upturn in Cobh‘s fortunes. A 14-6 quarter with baskets from Lucy Sheridan, Lucy Walsh and Francesca giving Cobh the upper hand. Ella O’Brien opened the fourth quarter scoring with a nice basket. Eight points from Francesca ensured that Cobh recorded a five point win and their first victory in the competition.
With Tolka Rovers recording a comprehensive win over Kilkenny, Cobh needed to secure victory in the final pool game against St Pauls in order to qualify for the semifinals.
St Paul’s started the brighter and lead 6–0. Francesco opened the Cobh account and a three point play by Ella O’Brien saw Cobh trail at the end of the first quarter by 6–5.&nbsp;
The start of the second quarter was even for most of the quarter with both sides trading baskets. Lucy Walsh and Naoise Ryan chipped in with baskets for Cobh but a late surge by Saint Pauls saw them lead 22-14 at halftime.
At one stage in the second half, the St Paul’s lead had stretched to 12 points. Cobh brought it back a bit but never got close enough to put the Kerry side under serious pressure and St Paul’s held their nerve to win the game by 40–31. This qualified St Paul’s to the semifinals and Cobh were in the heartbreaking position of missing out on the semifinals on score difference as they tied with Kilkenny and Tolka Rovers. Tolka Rovers qualified for the semifinals with a better score difference than Cobh and Kilkenny.
Sunday saw Cobh competing for positions 5 to 8 and their first opponents were Maree from Galway. Each quarter was closely contested with Cobh just edging each quarter. 15 points from Francesca and points from Lucy Walsh, Maebh Deavy, Lucy Sheridan and Naoise Ryan saw Cobh take the victory by 29-21.&nbsp;
Having beaten Maree, our last game saw us play Carrick Cruisers from Carrickmacross in County Monaghan. We struggled early on with the tenacity of their defence and trailed 13–10 at the end of the first quarter. Lucy Walsh scored all 10 points.&nbsp;
The second quarter was a similarly tight affair with Francesca scoring 10 points for Cobh but we trailed 24-20 at half time.&nbsp;
Outscoring Carrick by 10 points to 6 in the third quarter saw the game finely balanced at 30–30 heading into the last quarter. Isabelle, Lucy Walsh and Francesca did the scoring for Cobh in this quarter.&nbsp;
Lucy Sheridan opened the scoring in the fourth quarter with two free throws and excellent defence throughout the quarter kept Carrick to four points in this quarter. 11 points for Cobh ensured that we finished the AICC tournament in a very respectable fifth position. The final score was 41-34 to Cobh.&nbsp;
Well done to the girls in what was their first tournament outside of Cork. A huge thank you to Audrey Walsh and Claire Ronan for guiding them over the weekend. Also a big thanks to Sinéad Sheridan for supervising the girls in Gormanston. Great credit to Jimmy Quinlan, who unfortunately missed the weekend, and Audrey for their work with the girls over the last few years. The future is very bright for this group and we look forward to seeing their progress. Finally, a huge thank you to a dedicated bunch of parents who have supported their girls and the club in travelling around the county and now around the country.&nbsp;

&nbsp;&nbsp;Beavers had a visit from Cobh Tidy Towns Biodiversity Officer Colm Damery to talk about Bumblebees! Colm explained about the different types, then we went outside to try to spot some amongst the flowers growing around our hall. Our leader Ryan even scaled the wall to very briefly contain a bumblebee so that the kids could see one up close and try to identify her. Beavers left with a very important message for the survival of our bumblebees - don’t kill the dandelions!!

<h3>Coral Leisure Sports star of the Month award Callum Walsh</h3>
<h3>Message from Fr Liam</h3>
Whe I was publishing the hard copy of Cobh News for over 4 years, which I founded we had a sports Star award every two weeks. Many of them, went on to be household names in the world of sport. Just to name some of the first few, Kate Gardiner for Tennis she has gone on to become one of the best in the country. Timmy Wilk for athletics he has gone on to be be first Polish boy to play hurling for Cork which I predicted he would when he was just 12. Last year he starred for Cork Minors All-Ireland winners for the first time in 20 years and he joint Capt this year. In Consultation with Ber manager of Coral we decided to name Callum Walsh for the first Xplore Local Cobh App award in recognition of his fantastic achievements in his chosen sport boxing and martial arts since he left Cobh for the USA.
