Desmond, Kargbo &amp; McGrath join Cobh Ramblers FC from Cork City

Cobh Ramblers are pleased to announce the signings of Luke Desmond, Issa Kargbo and Sean McGrath from Cork City.
A 19 year old midfielder, Luke Desmond captained City's U19 side last season and made one First Division appearance. The Kinsale native came through Cork's Academy set-up, first joining their U17 side in 2018.
20 year old Issa joined Cork City from Ringmahon Rangers and came up through their academy system alongside twin brother Uniss. He made his first team debut in the 2020 Munster Senior Cup. He can play both as a full back and as a winger.
Finally, 19 year old attacker Sean McGrath featured for both Kerry and Limerick’s underage sides before joining City in 2019. The young forward also joins the Rams for the 2022 season.

Returning to the archaeology of the Whitepoint, Rushbrooke area these are photos. of the lime kiln at Blackpoint. There is another lime kiln at Whitepoint, near the bathing area. Use of lime is recorded as far back as Roman times where it was used in buildings. it is also recorded as being used by Celt warriors who painted themselves with lime wash before going in to battle. Most of the lime kilns in Ireland date from the 18th. and 19th. century, in Cork there are over 23.000 kilns recorded. The lime produced had many uses, as an additive to mortar for building, as a disinfectant, as whitewash on buildings, in the making of iron and steel but mostly in agriculture, where it was spread on the land as a soil enricher. On the Great Island most of the lime kilns are found either in Whitepoint or along the northern shoreline of the island. This is where the geology of the island is predominantly limestone. The main bedrock found on the island is red sandstone. The limestone in the Rosleague area extends across the channel to Carrigtowhill where it is commercially extracted in the many quarries along there. The production of lime was a slow and cumbersome business, loading of the lime which would have been quarried nearby was labour intensive and was overseen by a foreman called a Lime Burner, 2 or 3 other men would assist, working at the kiln head and at the raking out of the lime in the lower section. This was very difficult and hot work and some common sayings at the time include, " He was as dry as a lime burner" and " He'd drink as much as a lime burner". The lime would be loaded in layers between either coal or timber, turf or antricate and sometimes furze bushes. it would burn for up to 3 days before breaking down. It would be carried away by horse and butt and at Whitepoint, see photo., the cuttings and wear from the wheels of the butts are clearly visable along the shoreline towards the old gas works. Though lime is still spread seasonally on the fields the smaller lime kilns died out with the coming of the railways when lime could be transported from bigger commercial outlets, the use of cement in building also had an impact on lime use. 6th Class spent this week exploring the science of stunts and the impact forces have on objects. Together they decided on suitable materials to design and make a parachute. We were eager to see friction at work. All our parachutes had plenty of air resistance or drag to give them a soft landing!

The Colaiste Muire junior camogie team took on Carrigaline Community School in the final of the Katie Crowley Cup on Saturday last January 8th. Unfortunately there were a few notable absentees due to covid but a strong team still took to the field.&nbsp;
Colaiste Muire, playing with the wind started brightly and got a few early points on the board. This helped to settle the nerves. With our backs defending tirelessly and some great link up play from our midfielders and forwards, the goals came and Colaiste Muire stretched further ahead at half time. The second half was a closer affair as Carrigaline struck back with two goals. However Colaiste Muire were still finding scores easier to come by and kept their composure to the final whistle to run out comfortable winners.&nbsp;
Captain Aimee McKeown was presented with the Katie Crowley Cup to the delight of all team mates, family and supporters present. Massive credit is due to this limited panel of girls which who range from 1st to 5th year and who have shown massive commitment over the past few months. It is the first camogie title that the school have won in recent memory. With the talent on show on Saturday, we may not have as long a wait for the next!&nbsp;
A big thank you to Cobh GAA for the use of their facilities on Saturday and to all the supporters present.&nbsp;

Due to the recent tragic killing of a fellow member of the running family, Ashling Murphy, Mile 4 of the Sonia O'Sullivan Cobh 10 Race will forever be known and marked on the course as The Ashling Murphy Mile.&nbsp;
We hope it gives a modicum of solace to this young lady's family.
