Heritage Centre

Cobh Heritage Centre and The Queenstown Story opened to the public 29 years ago. Yesterday we celebrated and honoured some of our longest serving team members with a mayoral reception.

Between them, five of our team members have collectively given 100 years of service with one of the team celebrated for 28 years of service.

We are extremely grateful for the loyalty and commitment they have given over a long number of years.

Course Closed Friday 18th February

Following the red storm warning issued for Cork tonight and throughout the morning it has been decided to close the golf course tomorrow Friday for the day. This decision is very much with members and visitors safety in mind and also resting the golf course after a storm gives our course staff time to clear any debris and prepare the Golf Course for the weekend.

The intention is to reopen on Saturday with a members weekend singles competition.

‘They Will Burn with the Flame of the Mother’s Torment and in Ashes Transform’, 2021

This banner depicts six historical and contemporary figures who suffered the loss of their children, including a woman holding sheets from a Magdalene Laundry in Cork; a woman who was forcibly sterilized in Peru; an adolescent mother whose child was forcibly removed; and a woman completing a legal list of “risk factors” regarding her fitness as a mother. Saint Lucy, a fourth-century virgin martyr, is pictured in the foreground. Below these figures are a number of institutions depicted as being in hell, including Magdalene Laundries in England and Ireland, the Immigration Office in Spain, the Directorate General for Child and Adolescent Care in Catalonia, and an immigrant detention center in Barcelona. These buildings are adjacent to the portrayal of the burning of institutional racists—a reference to supposed witches who were burned at the stake. The portraits of a judge and a social worker represent authorities who remove children from their parents.

Daniela Ortiz’s exhibition ‘They Will Burn with the Flame of the Mother’s Torment and in Ashes Transform, produced by SIRIUS (and on view until 19 February), features works concerned with racist and patriarchal attitudes and practices, both historical and contemporary.
