<p>On Friday  22nd some of Cobh’s best bands will be performing in The Commodore Hotel, Cobh for the Red Cross’ work in Ukraine.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Six bands in all, from veterans Dr Doc &amp; The Side Effects to transition year rock band Telassa will be on stage from 730 to 12.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The Urge, Sway, The Hitmen and Ruth O’Brien’s band will all perform in the Jack Doyle Ballroom, with tickets for sale at the door, and all sales handled by Cobh Red Cross. Everyone is performing for free.</p>
<p>“We all felt we might be able to contribute more through an event like this than just with individual contributions” said Jim Quinlan, singer with Sway, and one time mayor of Cobh. “The Red Cross seems the obvious choice as they are so active on the ground in Ukraine and also have a network here in Cobh that could look after collecting cash.”&nbsp;</p>
<p>A similar event in The Commodore Jack Doyle Room in 2018 raised €5000 for autism charity, The Rainbow Club, which resulted in equipment being donated to St Joseph’s national school’s special unit. "The Red Cross relies on charitable contributions for all the important work we do, which saves lives after all," said  Hylda Murphy, Treasurer of Cobh Red Cross. "Events like this that help us raise funds and draw attention to the vital work we do everywhere are always welcome."&nbsp;</p>
<p>“This is a chance for the Cobh community to pull together and contribute: Dance or Donate - and hopefully have a laugh doing it. So it’s a win-win - and it’s important we do something.”&nbsp;</p>
<p>"This is a non-political event of course,“ said Mr Quinlan. “We may all have our views but this is just about helping the civilians so brutally affected by this. It’s an easy way for people to contribute.”&nbsp;</p>
<p>Tickets cost just €15 - and the Red Cross will sell all tickets and collect inside.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Tickets can now be purchased from reception at The Commodore Hotel.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Bit of nostalgia setting in  here, definitely felt a bit sentimental when looking in on PROGRESS?? in action at Damery's Field Ringmeen. Lots more houses to be built on what was for those of us of a certain vintage, well, the children of the 1950/60s who grew up in Moores Place, Plunkett Terrace and Barrymore Ave.. These fields were our playground, here we caught tadpoles and took them home in jam jars, caught bees, searched for birds nests, gathered our furze for bonefire night. Lying in bed on balmy summer nights we would leave the window open to hear the crex,  crex of the corncrake and be woken in the morning to the cry of the Cuccoo.  To us it was Grannyos, (Granny O'Shea), the house was out of bounds and we were all strictly warned by our parents not to go near it, it lay vacant for a number of years. We were always told, it was haunted and the sound of a  piano could be heard in the silent hours, though I never heard it.  Later it was one of the few natural meadows on the Island. Mr. Damery was a man ahead of his time in rewilding and caring for nature. Thinking about this lost haven brings to mind a little rhyme from the past as follows.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>Cobh Camogie Club’s Junior team were honoured at the  Lord Mayor Awards in County Hall. This was a great honour for the club and due recognition for the girl’s fundraising efforts  for Cobh Community Hospital. A special thank you to Cllr Seán O’Connor for the submission and to club secretary Lorraine for representing the club.</p>

<p>A big weekend of Academy football ahead, with four Ramblers teams away from home!</p>
<h3><span style="color: rgb(184,49,47);">Local Derby</span></h3>
<p>Friday night sees the Cork Derby return to St Colman’s Park as league leaders Cork City face the Rams.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Last time out Ramblers secured a precious three points on Easter Monday, defeating Athlone Town 3-2 thanks to goals from Beineón O’Brien Whitmarsh (2) and Conor Drinan. While the Rams remain eighth in the table, seventh place Bray are now only three points ahead. City themselves are three points clear of second place Galway and come into the game on the back of a 2-1 win at Waterford.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The last time the sides met in Cobh, Ramblers were 1-0 victors thanks to a Jake Hegarty winner in 2021. City were 2-0 winners when the pair met earlier this year at Turners Cross.</p>
<p>Captain John Kavanagh remains injured for Cobh and he’s been joined on the treatment table by Issa Kargbo who went off injured against Athlone. Harlain Mbayo serves a one game suspension having been sent off late on Monday. Dale Holland and Danny O’Connell also look like missing out through injury.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Manager Darren Murphy comes up against a former club of his and spoke to the assembled press earlier this week,</p>
<p>“It’ll be a challenge but we want to go out there and put in a performance. It’s a 90 minute game and anything can happen. Jake and Beineón are working well together, we have talent in the wide areas and across the squad. We have to put them under pressure and when you get that chance it’s important that we take it. We’ll be in front of a big home crowd again on Friday and our lads are starting to believe in themselves.</p>
<p>Anyone that’s interested in football around Cork will be there. It’s a huge game and you’ll get people coming out for a great night of football.”</p>
<p>Striker Jake Hegarty also gave his views, ahead of a fixture in which he scored the winner in last season,</p>
<p>“These games don’t come around too often. We all know what it felt like to beat them last year. We owe them one, we didn’t perform to our best the last time we met. It’ll be a physical game, it’ll be intense, lively and how a derby should be. We’ll be well up for it.”</p>
<p>Kick-off on Friday night in St Colman’s Park at 19:45.</p>
