<h2><span style="color: rgb(41,105,176);">Cobh 48 Ballincollig 45</span></h2>
<p>The Division 2 championship final saw two teams who have met twice already this season face each other once again. Ballincollig had won their home game by 4 while Cobh prevailed by the narrowest of margins in their home fixture.&nbsp;</p>
<p>An excellent opening quarter by Cobh saw them hitting 4 three pointers against the Ballincollig zone defence. Brian Cummins was the hot hand early on with 3 threes and Kenoly Ugbodu chipped in with one as well. Cobh lead 17-11 at the end of the first quarter.&nbsp;</p>
<p>A change to man to man defence by Ballincollig at the start of the second quarter saw them shut down Cobh’s outside shots. Richie O’Sullivan had some nice drives to the basket for the Cobh team while Ryan O’Halloran kept Ballincollig in touch with some excellent shooting. Cobh held an eight point lead at half time and lead 29-21.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Cobh struggled to put the ball in the basket in the third quarter and Ballincollig made inroads into the lead. Rob Holton chipped in with a basket and a late basket from Brian Butler saw Cobh heading into the fourth quarter with a 36-32 lead.&nbsp;</p>
<p>It wasn’t long before Ballincollig tied the game and looked to have the momentum heading down the home stretch. Poor free throw shooting was to prove costly for Ballincollig as a basket from Kevin Foster O’Reilly, free throws from Brian Cummins and a big basket from Rob Holton saw Cobh edge back in front and they hung on for a first Division 2 championship for the club. Brian Cummins with 24 points was a well deserved MVP. Co-captains, Brian Cummins and Rob Holton collected what is a first Division 2 championship cup for Cobh.&nbsp;</p>

<p>I remember the 74 foot shot from Gerald Kennedy that won Neptune the 1988 league in overtime in Neptune stadium along with the 100,000 or so who claim to have been there. People talk about the Michael Thomas goal in Anfield in 1998, the Solskjaer goal in the Nou Camp in 1999, Liverpool’s comeback in Instanbul in 2005.  And not to forget Aguero’s goal for City that broke United’s hearts in 2012. Sport is full of moments that will endure in your memory forever.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Yesterday was one of those moments where our U18 team who at one point trailed by 16 points somehow managed to raise their game and complete a remarkable comeback to beat Carrigaline in a pulsating U18B championship final.&nbsp;</p>
<p>It was 16-12 to Carrigaline at the end of the first quarter, 39-26 at halftime and it was looking ominous for Cobh. Carrigaline were playing beautiful basketball with Killian McNulty, Thomas Foley and Shane McCollum doing major damage for them. 13 points from Sam O’Connell, 11 from Francesco Tolardo and 2 points from Oisin Bonne were keeping Cobh in touch but the momentum was all in favour of Carrigaline.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The introduction of Adam Doran helped curtail the scoring threat from Carrigaline and Luwé de Wet started finding some space to attack the basket. 6 points from Luwé started the fight back and by the end of the third, Cobh trailed 53-47. 10 points from Sam, 9 from Luwé and 2 from Francesco saw Cobh win the quarter 21-14. Joe Kelleher had come off the bench and he had helped to steady the ship in what was his first appearance of the season.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Sam hit a three pointer for Cobh at the start of the fourth to keep the comeback going. With 6:53 left in the final quarter, Carrigaline lead 57-53. When the Carrigaline coach called a timeout with 5:19 on the clock, Cobh had taken the lead 58-57 with 5 points without reply from Francesco. Another monstrous banked three pointer from Sam kept us in front. Carrigaline with 6 points from Thomas Foley and another 6 from Shane McCollum were fighting hard and it was nip and tuck down the final stretch. Two three pointers from Joe were followed by a pair of free throws. When Sam added a final free throw, the comeback was complete. A remarkable 26 points in the last quarter saw Cobh capture the title on a scoreline on 73-69.&nbsp;</p>
<p>While it was obviously a joyous occasion for Cobh, you would have to have sympathy for a gallant Carrigaline side who contributed hugely to one of the best games of the championship weekend.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Sam O’Connell was a worthy MVP with 32 points. Francesco with 20, Luwé with 11, Joe with 8 and Oisin with 2 completed the Cobh scoring. Mark O’Rourke and Adam were both hugely impressive defenders and Shane Butler and Matthew O’Doherty played their parts in a remarkable win for our club.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<h3><span style="color: rgb(184,49,47);">Under 16 Girls</span></h3>
<p>This weekend saw our U16 team go to Gormanston to take part in the All Ireland Club Championships.</p>

<p>A group comprising of quality opposition saw them take on Bobcats of Kerry, old foes Fr. Mathews and Dublin powerhouses, and subsequent overall winners, Meteors.</p>
<p>The 3 hour early morning trek on Saturday wasn’t ideal with the early game start, but the girls were competitive throughout and that was the tone for all the games Saturday, against teams with players experienced in the Irish international set up.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The fact they were disappointed not to take one and possibly two games, illustrated the level they were playing at.</p>
<p>As things moved into Sunday morning, a slightly disappointing outing against Maree from Galway was followed finally by a deserving and comprehensive win over Tipperary, which made the journey home a little easier!</p>
<p>The girls finished 7th overall at the highest competition level in the country - no mean feat for a town this size going up against teams from towns and cities with a far larger playing pool to pull from.</p>
<p>Overall it was a phenomenal experience for all involved, and some great memories will remain.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Special word of thanks to the parents and families who were able to make the trip in support, and for the messages of support as well.</p>
<p>An amazing weekend for the club overall, and the 16’s were a fitting part of it🏀👏</p>

<h3><span style="color: rgb(184,49,47);">Cleancoast</span></h3>
<p>Cleancoast Cobh volunteers have been very busy this week showing how we #LoveCobh.</p>
<p>During our clean of the marshy area off Pottery Road last week, Clean Coasts volunteers and local residents noted some old rubbish that needed muscle work and tools to dig out of the boggy area along the coast.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Yesterday, a few went back to dig out the long buried televisions, tyres and assorted rubbish.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Meanwhile, two young volunteers had a planned birthday outing to Leahys Open Farm postponed due to chicken pox so instead did their An Taisce National Spring Clean duty at Connolly Street Strand.</p>
<p>Marlogue and East Ferry also received a bit of TLC from local volunteers who bagged 23 bottles and heaved tyres to a collection spot.&nbsp;</p>
<p>As always, thank you to #Cobh litter warden, Clodagh Meade, and Cork County Council staff who partner with us to collect the rubbish gathered.</p>
