Ballymore Cobh AC at Nenagh

A big well done to each of our young members who travelled to Tipperary for today’s Munster u9-u11 Indoor Championships.

For most of these boys and girls it was their first taste of Track & Field competition and all were making their debut around the tight confines of the long serving and much loved Nenagh Indoor Stadium.

Our u9 girls, Emily, Hannah & Sadhb, all stepped up to the mark with great gusto for their respective run (60m & 300m) and (long) jump challenges.

Max was our solo participant in the boys u10 events and flew the flag with honour, giving his very best in each of the three events (60m, 500m & Long Jump).

In the Girls u10 60m sprint Lucy hit the finish line hard and fast, winning her heat and securing a highly creditable 6th place overall in an event that saw 88 girls compete across 11 well contested heats. As with all track events on the day, the winners were decided by fastest times rather than a final.

Despite meeting plenty of trouble in running, Alfie was a clear winner of his heat in the Boys u9 300m and recorded a time fast enough to secure third place overall and a brilliant bronze medal for his efforts.

Thank you to all travelling coaches, parents, event organizers and officials who gave generously of their time and energy to volunteer and support all the youngsters taking part, proving once again that everyone is a winner in our brilliant sport of athletics.

SPRINGFIELD RAMBLERS

GIRLS U19 THROUGH TO CUP FINAL

undefined

Riverstown 1-3 Springfield Ramblers

A fantastic display of football from our U19s sees them through to the CWSSL Cup Final. Despite Riverstown taking an early lead and their attempt to press and close down Springfield in numbers. Springfield football ability shone through with some incredible one touch football. Goals from Freida, Julia Moreno and a bullet header from Amy Kennedy seen the girls through to the final.

Well done girls from everyone at the club and we look forward to the final

Springfield continue good form

Kilmichael Rovers 2 V Springfield AFC 4

A hard fought three points where the Cobh team extended their unbeaten run to six matches and kept their push for promotion on track.

The first half saw the Cobh team dominate possession and took the lead with Shane Geasley sharp finish on 20minutes . Closely followed by a second goal by Jamie Britton incisive run from the right side . Then with half time approaching Connie Murphy’s 25 yard drive sailed past the unsighted Rovers keeper. Kevin Wilmott was controlling the midfield allowing the forward players to threaten the goal on several occasions but Rovers too had their chances but didn’t convert.

Second half the game turned on its head with Kilmichael imposing a more physical presence that reap rewards when latching onto a poor clearance out making it 1-3 . Then a second goal for Rovers made the last ten minutes frantic but with only minutes remaining an accurate long pass from Sean Wright found the industrious Shane Geasley to beat the last defender and coolly calm the nerves and secure the away win 2-4

Despite the difficult pitch conditions the game was well contested throughout and no doubt Rovers can take a lot from this match to finish the season strongly.

Coral Leisure Sports star of the Month award Callum Walsh

Message from Fr Liam

Whe I was publishing the hard copy of Cobh News for over 4 years, which I founded we had a sports Star award every two weeks. Many of them, went on to be household names in the world of sport. Just to name some of the first few, Kate Gardiner for Tennis she has gone on to become one of the best in the country. Timmy Wilk for athletics he has gone on to be be first Polish boy to play hurling for Cork which I predicted he would when he was just 12. Last year he starred for Cork Minors All-Ireland winners for the first time in 20 years and he joint Capt this year. In Consultation with Ber manager of Coral we decided to name Callum Walsh for the first Xplore Local Cobh App award in recognition of his fantastic achievements in his chosen sport boxing and martial arts since he left Cobh for the USA.

For future awards we invite sports clubs or individuals from the Great Island to Nominate somebody. email liamkelleher44@gmail.com
