Cobh Basketball Club
Well done to our Division 1 ladies on their fantastic win last night against Ballincollig in the championship quarter final. Basket for basket the whole game but Cobh came out on top to win 33-31
Lovely to have Irene and Paula in attendance at our 64-43 win over Bantry in the Senior championship.
Under 14 girls
Our U14 girls suffered a narrow five point loss to our great rivals, Limerick Celtics, in the CLBB championship. All championship games are played in the Parochial Hall and there was a nice crowd present to see both teams play.
The first quarter was a close affair with 5 points from Lucy Walsh and a basket from Isabelle Bardsley left Cobh trailing by a point at the end of the quarter.
Poor transition defence in the second quarter lead to Celtics running in too many layups and they dominated the second quarter scoring 20 points to Cobh’s 10. Laura Goeck and Abbey Nealon were prominent for Celtics in this quarter while 6 points from Ella O’Brien and baskets from Francesca Kyamagero and Sonia Balanzin kept Cobh in the game, trailing by 11 at half time.
Celtics continued to impress in the third quarter with Laura Goeck adding another 8 points. Lucy and Francesca had 8 points between them to leave the third quarter score at 25-40.
A tremendous fight back in the fourth quarter left Cobh down three points with 3 minutes to go. As hard as they tried they were unable to get any closer and a late basket left Limerick to take home the victory.
Team: Ava Quinlan, Francesca Kyamagero (16), Isabelle Bardsley (2), Emily Ring, Maebh Deavy, Lucy Walsh (11), Sonia Balanzin (2), Ella O’Brien (8), Lucy Sheridan, Nicole Nkezamuzima, Lily Quinlan.

Springfield Ramblers 4-2 Mallow
Missing 4 big players from last week's national cup win the squad pulled together and leapfrogged Mallow into 2nd place in the table with a great team performance today. Playing into the wind the girls raced into a 3-0 lead with a brilliant hatrick from Sarah Drumgoole. Mallow were always dangerous up front and got one back just before half time to make it 3-1. They started best in the 2nd half and got a 2nd within 10 minutes to make it 3-2. A great goalkeeping display from our keeper Cliona helped by defenders Ava, Blaithin and Orla kept Mallow at bay and we gradually settled down again. Ruby Sillett was a constant threat and got our 4th with 10 minutes to go to make the points safe. A brilliant team performance with player of the match going to Amy Nash. We'll done girls.
We welcomed Blarneys Premier division side to Cobh in the last 16 of the Una Moore Cup. Blarney started really well with some excellent football, Springfield Ramblers setup well and defended really well as a team. Blarney kept pushing and really tested Lily Walsh Curley on 6 occasions but Lily pulled off some amazing saves. Blarney went one up with 5 mins to go in first half. Springfield struggled to create many chances in the first half Gwyn Murphy causing some problems for Blarney but they took the 1-0 lead into the second half. Blarney started the second half really strong and again Lily Walsh Curley had a lot of work to do with some superb goalkeeping. Blarney made it two with an amazing strike from there number 9. Springfield had a of defending to do throughout the second half. Blarney really showed some quality football and scored another two quick goals.
Well done to Blarney and best of luck in next round.
It’s Christmas for one night only considering we missed out on Christmas night 2020 and 2021! Our volunteers had a lovely meal out tonight in the Watersedge with a bit of high jinx and Secret Santa thrown in. Good to be out together for fun and chats. Our volunteers surprised our chairperson Hendrick Verwey with a beautiful Elaine Watters painting of colourful Westview for all the hard work with the team and behind the scenes.
American Guest
On Saturday we had a short visit from John Widmann, City Carillonneur of Frederick (Maryland), who's currently spending a year in Belgium pursuing studies at the Royal Carillon School in Mechelen. This is a clip of John playing the traditional Irish hymn "St Patrick's Breastplate" arranged by the late Sally Slade Warner.
