<p>Congratulations to the 2021 Donnachie Cup Winners, Seamus Walsh and Senan Dormer!</p>
<p>At Sundays  presentation it was great to hear Paddy Donnachie bring us down memory lane on how the Donnachie Cup (foursomes matchplay) began 21 years ago. He spoke of his and Patrick’s experiences of winning the event in the past; how they enjoy participating every year; that it brings members together; and helps create friendships within the club!&nbsp;</p>
<p>Quote from the champions…”We are looking forward to retaining the trophy in 2022!!”&nbsp;</p>

<p>A huge congratulations and thank you is due to our local Cobhseascouts Fundraising  who have taken on the task of keeping their area of the strand free of litter.&nbsp;</p>
<p>After meeting with the 6-8 year old Beavers for a beach clean in Carrigaloe late last year, we challenged them to keep the area around the Scout Hall clear of rubbish. Not only have they taken that challenge but they're frequently extending their beach cleans to other beaches around Great Island.&nbsp;</p>
<p>A huge credit it due to the children, the leaders who encourage them and the families raising them. If you know a member of Cobh Sea Scouts, congratulate them for a job well done!&nbsp;</p>
<p>To help these fantastic kids out, please take your rubbish home or use the many, many bins around. Though I can't believe it has to be said, if you do see the children picking rubbish along the strand, please do not throw rubbish down on the 6, 7 and 8 year olds. It is not appreciated.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Well done to the Beavers, you should be very proud of yourselves!&nbsp;</p>
<h3>SPIKE</h3>

<p>On Saturday evening, 30 April, an organised event was held on Spike Island to mark the 101st anniversary of the first escape of IRA prisoners from Spike Island during the War of Independence. The 100th anniversary of the escape could not be officially commemorated due to Covid-19. On 30 April 1921, three IRA prisoners, Tom Malone (alias Sean Forde), Con Twomey and Sean MacSwiney (brother of Terence MacSwiney), escaped from the island with the assistance of four members of Cobh Company IRA - Comdt Michael Burke, Frank Barry, Andrew Butterly and George O'Reilly. An account of the escape can be found in Tom O'Neill's book 'Spike Island's Republican Prisoners, 1921'. Saturday's event was attended by members of George O'Reilly's family, including his son and one of his two surviving daughters and Cathal MacSwiney Brugha (grand-nephew of Sean MacSwiney and grandson of Cathal Brugha and Terence MacSwiney), along with members of the general public. Tom O'Neill delivered a lecture to the group on the events of 30 April 1921 and the group was then treated to a tour of the island, including a visit to cell 28 in the north-eastern casements, where the IRA prisoners were held during their incarceration. It was a lovely occasion and a fitting tribute to those Cobh men who were instrumental in orchestrating the successful escape of Malone, MacSwiney and Twomey from Spike Island.</p>

<p>This year we have two options for our walkers ,both St.Colemans Cathedral and Christ Church will open  up on May 7th for anyone who would like to pop in and perhaps light a candle or say a prayer to loved ones who have gone before us.</p>
<p>Thank you to both Cobh Parish and Christ church for this,it is very much appreciated</p>

<p>After winning all their games in Premier 2 Feile Games in East Cork on Saturday the under 15 boys travelled to Blarney this Monday evening  to take on Kilshannig in the Co Semis it was a heartbreaking loss by a single goal. Kilsahnnig had a very comprehensive win over Donoughmore in the final. It was very sporting to see many of the team and their families coming from a different venue to watch the final,  which saw Kilshannigh give an exhibition of football. For Cobh it shows where they have come from in football during this season. Well done to all the lads and their mentors including Colm Cotter and Don Ryan. A huge future awaits them if they stick together.</p>
