<h3>Tidy Towns.       Who will rise to the challenge??!!</h3>

<p>We had 10 members from Ballymore Cobh A.C. out for our Wednesday work hour at 7pm. We were delighted they contacted us to help out. Lots of pole scraping and painting completed and all the seats in the Promenade cleaned of crow &amp; seagull poop which was a job crying out to be done.&nbsp;</p>
<p>So the gloves are off and the baton is ready to be passed on to the next Cobh club who can get 10 members to come out and help us on a Wednesday evening for 1 hour during July &amp; August. Are you up for it?&nbsp;</p>

<h3>Basketball 3 v 3</h3>

<p>The club will hold a fundraiser 3 v 3 competition on Monday, July 11th in Coláiste Muire. Monies raised will go to help defray the expenses incurred by Amy Duggan in representing Ireland in the Under 18 European championships in Bulgaria.&nbsp;</p>
<p>There will be two categories - Under 16 (born in 2007 or later) and Over 16 ( born in 2006 or earlier). Teams will be of mixed gender.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Registration for the Under 16 event will be at 5 pm with the competition to run from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Registration for the Over 16 event will be at  7pm with the competition to run from 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Teams will be formed on the night and there is a €5 charge per player.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Simply turn up at 5 pm or 7 pm and we will sort a team for you.</p>

<p>Well done to the u12 girls on a great team performance with some great scores and tough defending, managing to come away with a win against Éire Óg.</p>

<p>45 years ago today  7/7/77 I organized my first major international athletics event at Midleton CBS  grass track among the athletes taking part, Steve Ovett ran his first competitive 5,000m deafening Waterford pair John TREACY and Gerry Deegan clocking 13.53. Eamonn Coghlan and a team of German athletes from Darmstadt as well as our own Liam O'Brien competed. Joe Brice reached the qualifying standard for the European Juniors in the discus, the circle was put down that morning with quick setting cement. He headed off to Russia for the event before taking up an athletic scholarship at the University of Lowell in Boston. I visited him for 10 days at Easter in Boston. Great memories I met Eamon Coghlan's daughter yesterday, she is here for the wedding with her family. Eamon is off to Eugene for the World championships hopefully I will meet up with him there.</p>

<p>Stephen Michael James Ovett, OBE is a retired British track athlete. A middle-distance runner, he was the gold medalist in the 800 metres at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow, and set 5 world records for 1500 metres and the mile run and a world record at two miles. Wikipedia</p>

<h3>Hall of Fame Induction 2009</h3>
<p>The Hall of Fame award is presented to an athlete who has achieved to the highest level and is considered world class. The recipients have transcended the sport and are sporting legends.&nbsp;</p>
<p>It was especially appropriate that John Treacy was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2009, as it was the 25th anniversary of his Marathon silver medal in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics’ Marathon and the 30th anniversary of him retaining his World Cross Country title in 1979.</p>
<p>John Treacy’s Los Angeles performance is one of the iconic achievements in Irish sporting history and it speaks volumes of his character that it came less than a year after he experienced the low of tailing off virtually last in his 10,000m heat at the World Championships in Helsinki.</p>
<p>The Waterford man won the first of his two successive World Cross Country Championships in the mud and snow at Bellahouston Park in Glasgow in 1978. In 1979 on that never to be forgotten day in Irish sport – Treacy retained his World Cross Country title in front of 25,000 spectators at Limerick Racecourse.</p>
<p>Treacy was never less than a fearless competitor in a 20-year international career that began as a 16-year-old when he won bronze in the Junior race at the World Cross Country Championships in Monza. He ended with another victory when he ran 2:14.40 to win the 1993 Dublin Marathon.</p>

<p>The meadow sowed a year ago in College Manor may not be looking as colourful as it did last summer as these meadows look less showy or vibrant in their 2nd year but are far better for pollinators as the deeper rooted perennials get established. Thanks to Lena Bruggers for the photos this week.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The one thing that was surprising was the lack of butterflies on the day so maybe people could keep an eye out for them and send in any photos. We should be seeing meadow browns and ringlets there at the moment.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The rare solitary bee (Grey banded mining bee) is on the endangered list in Ireland and quite scarce so a good enough reason to keep maintaining the meadow.</p>
<p>We are planting for pollinators not for people and the proof is in a rare and endangered solitary bee that wouldn't be there without the native plants. We will give the area its annual cut in Autumn</p>

<p>Hawaiian night was a success on camp. From tie dying t-shirts to BBQ kebabs and oven baked pizzas to a volleyball tournament we had great fun!</p>
