<p>On July 11th, 1938, Spike Island was handed from British to Irish control.  It was a pleasure to be part of the ceremony to commemorate this event on the 11th in Cobh.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>Im just back from Spain from my nephews wedding and I am flying to Seattle on Friday and going to Eugene on Saturday for  my 10th world athletic Championships. It  was always an ambition of mine to visit Oregon the home of one of my running idols, the late Steve Prefontaine who tragically lost his life in a car crash. The film on johns life story is a classic well worth watching. Good luck to Pierce O'Callaghan the chief of the championships held for the first time in the USA, and best of luck to the Irish athletes competing.</p>

<p>If you're in any of these places over the next few days you can't help but notice the difference that an early morning visit of a road sweeper makes.</p>
<p>From Fota "green gates" to Belvelly, around Castle, Old Church car park, outside Applegreen, town centre from Garda Station to Sirius Wharf,  Rahilly Street, up past Cathedral and back down, Roche's Row to start of houses, West View, Laundry Hill, Ahern's Place. Huge difference. The weeds will grow where the sweeper does not go.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Gone are the cigarette butts, dirt &amp; grime and the weeds. Thanks to Hendrick and Wil for getting up early and maximising the effectiveness of the sweeper by using leaf blowers to clear pavements along the route.</p>
<p>The sweeper and driver were supplied by Noblewood Landscapes and paid for by Cobh Tidy Towns.&nbsp;</p>
