Historic Day

undefined

On 11th July 1938 the Irish Tricolour was ran up for the first time ever on Spike Island at 8pm by then Taoiseach Eamon De Valera. This was an occasion for great celebration in Cobh and around Cork Harbour as earlier in the day British troops had vacated the forts of Cork Harbour.

Despite the laying down of arms on this very day in 1921 and the subsequent negotiation of Irish Independence – three ports remained in the control of the British Army: Berehaven, Lough Swilly and Cork Harbour, including Spike Island.

It wasn’t until 1938 – merely one year before the outbreak of WW2 that the 3 ports were returned to Ireland.

This evening at 7.50pm a short ceremony will take place in the Promenade to commemorate this historic event. Organised by Cobh Tourism and the Cobh Branch O.N.E. the Irish Tricolour will be ceremonially raised in the Promenade and simultaneously on Spike Island.
