<h2>Summer reflection</h2>

As we come to the end of the Summer holidays and its back to school time, there are a number of things to catch up on. We hope you had a very enjoyable Summer, thankfully the weather was wonderful with plenty of activity on the island and further afield. From my own point of view I fulfilled a lifetime ambition of travelling to Eugene in Oregon on the west coast of the USA, the nerve cente of the USA athletic activity and fraternity. The occasion was the world track and field championships and a longing to savour the atmosphere where a great athlete grew up who i saw competing, at the first of the 8 Olympics i attended in Munich in 1972 in the 5,000m event. Sadly Steve Prefontaine, was lost to the sport he adorned at the age of 24 long before his time. I visited the site of that fateful crash which brought tears to my eyes and I witnessed a constant steam of visitors high up on the hills among the trails where he honed his skills and his love of running. Everything in Eugene is steeped in his memory. The stadium itself one of the most iconic in the world exudes everything that is good about the sport and while the capacity is smaller than most major games stadiums, the atmosphere was electric and brought out the very best from the athletes of the world in their efforts to win global titles, and create 2 world records, my one regret was that I was not there for all the 10 days.&nbsp;&nbsp;
I travelled directly from Dublin to Seattle after returning from Spain where I spend 10 days for my nephews wedding. I flew from Seattle to Eugene on Saturday morning and although Feidhlim Kelly said he would find some space to lay my head, I did not want to impose on his space with his involvement with his athletes. He did tell me I could drop off my bag, until I found accommodation. I spent 4 hours walking around the centre of Eugene and found nothing and at 4 after waiting an hour for a taxi I decided to head for the stadium for the 5pm start. I saw a vacancy sign at a hotel and asked the taxi driver to bring me back and I deposited my bag and arrived at he stadium just in time. The security was brilliant, no hold up, my ticked was one of the best, courtesy of Pierce O'Callaghan the director of proceedings. I was blown away with the magnificent stadium and atmosphere. I met Feidhlim and some of his group Mark English, Andrew Coscoran, Cathal Dennehy, and we sat outside the athletes restaurant and had an enjoyable meal. I headed back walking to my hotel and it took and hour. I had an early morning rise listening to the Kilkenny, Limerick All-Ireland hurling final on the radio. I went to the local church for Sunday morning mass and after mass I went to the attached hall for breakfast, I got none in the hotel despite paying $330 dollars for the night. At breakfast I asked a lady for the wifi code I wanted to catch up on the golf Rory McIlroywas 2 shots up with 4 holes to play in the Open. After getting the bad news on Rory, Alexandra spotted that I was Irish she told me her best friend was Irish and she rang her. Clodagh answered the phone and said she new me as a photographer, coach and athlete. She ran with Ovens AC as Clodagh Kelleher as her sister did, she graduated to cycling before emigrating to the USA after spending 13 years at Fairbanks in Alaska, she returned with her husband David and 3 children to Eugene where she is a physiotherapist at the university, daughter Annika is a member of the track and x country roster. David's brother is Vice President of the university. So they were my hosts for the next 4 days at their home about 4 miles out of Eugene in the country. They brought me to the track each evening and it made my trip to Eugene really special. I went form there by bus to Portand had a short visit with William Galvin a former North Cork athlete and traveled on from there by train to Seattle and spent the night with Anita Philpott and her family another North Cork athlete, one of the best if not the best I every coached as a juvenile she had great battles with Sonia. She went on scholarship to Providence the age year as Sonia went to Villanova. She won the US junior x country title her first year there. She was plagued by injury she did win a National 1,500 title and her brief International career ended when she reached the final of the European 3,000m championship an event Sonia won.&nbsp;
Alaska&nbsp;
After a night stay over, husband Joe brought me to the airport and I flew off on another leg of my adventure to Alaska. It was a 3 and a half hour flight to Fairbanks I was visiting Ashley Holmberg, who was the amazing Violinist with the Two Lions Band who came to Ireland 4 years before to play at the 8 Functions I had for my golden Jubilee at the various parishes I ministered in. . They played in all the schools in Cobh as well as other schools and gave two free concerts on the bandstand on the promenade in Cobh. Ashley had returned home from California and got herself a husband. She lived 5 mins from the airport, it was wonderful to meet-up again. Less than an hour after arriving, we went to back to the airport to see her dad flying off on a one and half hour flight to his gold mine, he is a former airforce pilate and now runs the goldmine for 6 months of the year . The week was full of non stop adventure with a full programme each day, visiting heritage centres, museums. Watching the parade for the biggest event in the year the Golden Day with over 200 floats. A visit to the Chena hot springs was magical as was the experience of 24 hours of daylight. We did not get an opportunity to visit the North Pole and see Santa Claus until the morning I was due to fly back to Seattle and straight on to Maui in Hawaii for 12 days. But it was a magical ending to a magical week. The time in Maui was totally relaxing my 2nd visit there this year meting up with many of the friends I have there. I took a night flight back to Seattle and was collected by Anita at 6.30am. Regina Joyce a former athletic great and who lives in Seattle and another friend of Anita, joined us for Lunch. The following night I went to the airport again with the family and flew with them directly back to Dublin. Tired but happy after a wonderful adventure. A great performance and some great goals in this victory for Wanderers tonight on the Stephen Ireland Astroturf. Nathan O' Connell grabbed the first of his hat-trick on 28minutes when he robbed the defender and fired past the keeper for the opener. Michael O' Rourke added a second just on halftime with a superb bicycle kick from inside the box. Nathan hit an unstoppable shot from outside the box to the top corner of the net after 49 minutes to increase the lead before Ciarán Griffin saw his brilliant effort come off the crossbar and somehow stay out when it deserved a goal. Hall went up the other end and immediately won a penalty and reduced the deficit to 3-1. Wanderers won a penalty of their own following a handball and O' Connell converted to complete his hat-trick. Only a minute later O' Connell rolled a free into the path of captain Eoin Hastings and he blasted a side-footer effort to the net leaving the keeper with no chance. Another impressive performance from Davin O' Neill's squad and a big game against College Corinthians in the first game of the league next Friday at home. Well done tonight.&nbsp;

Parents/guardians of current members are kindly requested to attend, re-register and meet with section leaders for the new Scouting year 2022/2023.
Parents of children who have submitted an application to join, are also invited to attend to register, please see your email.
We have a limited number of places available in all sections this year, and we invite those interested in joining to come along on Wednesday night to complete application for membership and meet with us.&nbsp;
All parents will be informed of confirmed places by the end of the week.
All sections meetings will resume the following week.

Good start to the season for our U14 Division 1 squad with a deserved 3-1 win away to Kinsale.&nbsp;
We went 1-0 up within a minute. Cillian O’ Connell drove through midfield, crossing for Max Meade who scored with a cool finish.&nbsp;
Padraig O’ Connell put us 2-0 up shortly after with a fine long range shot.&nbsp;
His twin brother Cillian had us 3-0 in front after 20 minutes with a nice finish into the bottom corner.&nbsp;
Kinsale came back into the game in the second half but good defending from our back four and midfielders ( not to mention solid goalkeeping) kept the Kinsale attackers at bay.&nbsp;
Kinsale got one back late in the game but overall a well deserved 3-1 win for the Cobh lads.&nbsp;
An excellent squad effort from all 16 players.

Well done to the under 12 girls who made the long journey to Kealkil near Bantry on Sunday to take on St Colums's in the first round of the under 12 Cork Co playoffs. Cobh are part of the 4 team group and they came up against a much more physical St Colum's side . Seeing that it was their first excursion into Co Competition it was difficult to know what to expect, .In the end they lost out, but it was the manner of their approach that endeared them to their followers. They overcame an early two point deficit to take the lead with a cracking goal volleyed home in soccer style by Sarah one of the youngest players in the 30. The defence were under constant pressure from the slick moving home forwards movements, but a tremendous goalkeeping display and a wholehearted effort by the entire defence kept the score down. Gradually they found their feet going forward and when the 4th quarter started they were still in with a shout. They never gave up and dominated a tiring opposing team. Wayward shooting in front of goal, which can be put down to lack of experience at this level, saw a growing number of wides. The final score of 1--11 to 1-4 did not do justice, to the girls, who fought bravely to the end and that was a hugely positive aspect of their first foray into this level of competition and the next 2 games in their group can be looked forward to with great expectations. Well done girls who gave your all on the day.
