Story of the week

Ber's fantastic account of her experience.

Where do I even begin, what a weekend from start to finish.

undefined

Training started in May while I was in the middle of training for the Cork Marathon. A normal person would do one or the other but sure what's the fun in that. Once the marathon was done it was full steam ahead.

5.30am alarms on the weekend for long cycles and solo long runs the day after. Midweek training was worked around kids, work and Cobh Ramblers 🤣🤣with the help of my supportive gang at work and family.

My mother accompanied my to registration on Thursday. I'm very lucky to have such an active parent in my life.

Friday was Ryan and Cullens day as they took to the streets of Youghal for Ironkids. An absolute superb event and fantastic to see children of all ages and abilities running together as equals.

Saturday morning alarm at 4am. I was ready to face the day ahead. No change in breakfast routine, 2 slices of toast with nutella and a cup of coffee followed by a slow intake of tailwind over the next hour or so. Niall Mcdermott had fueled me well the previous 2 to 3 days.

I headed to transition to put my water bottles on my bike accompanied by Jamie, Courtney and my hubby Damien. Bottles dropped and onto the swim start. The place was packed. I was soaking it all up whilst having an internal WTF am I doing here moment 🤣🤣 I left my three companions and placed myself in the 40 minute group. That was my goal, get out of the water 40 minutes.

Swim started and it was like getting into a warm bath, the water temp was perfect. Lots of shuffling around people at the start as it's fairly packed but once the field thins out it's easier to get into a rhythm. I saw the exit buoys and out of the water I got. Stopped the watch and it read 33mins. Alma them long swims with you def paid off girl. I knew then that things were going to go my way.

Into bike transition, wet gear off, bike gear on. I met Richie on exiting the tent he was waiting to start the bike section of the relay. A giddy up, get going and I was off. I was very familiar with the route ahead as I had done it a few times with my long cycle cycling buddies Kate, Bob, Ali and Ruth. The bike is definitely my weakest discipline as I'd only bought a bike back in 2020. Flew through the course and then the lane leading to Windmill Hill approached. Myself and another man side by side. "Are we chancing it?" He said to me. I said "You are but I'm f**kin not" 🤣🤣🤣 I had gotten up the hill in training but had made the decision about two weeks previous to not attempt it on the day for two reasons, I didn't want someone falling on top of me and I didn't want to end up coming to an abrupt stop and falling. I wanted to be able to finish what I set out to do. Hopped off the bike at the bottom and low and behold your man that went up ahead of me came to an abrupt stop half way up. I would come off for sure. Pushed the bike to the top of the hill, got back on and headed into transition. 3 hours and 19 minutes on my watch. 20 minutes ahead of schedule.

I took an extra few minutes here in transition. Plastered Myself in body glide and took on additional salt tablets. I was ready to get through this half marathon.

The first 2km were fairly much downhill. My first mile split read 8 mins 40 secs. I had to bring the pace back in order to sustain a comfortable 13 miles especially in the heat.

I brought the pace back about 30 seconds and turned the pace face off on my watch. Run to feel. Enjoy it. Those 13 miles were the most enjoyable 13 miles I've ever ran. The support, the residents of Youghal out with water hoses cooling us down, the aid stations manned by children and teenagers. I could go on forever.

I walked the aid stations to ensure I was taking on enough water and isotonic.

Tommy was the first person I met on my run in to the finish about 500 metres out. Always a great support. Get up that hill ya pufter 🤣🤣

The red carpet, what a bloody experience. People so very important to me were there. Ollie and Raymond were working but I forgive them. 🤣I had made it. 6 hours and 8 mins. I had smashed my 7 hour target.

Someone was meant to be starting with me that morning but was unable to due to an unlucky, bout of illness. I will toe the line with you in the future. You supported me, I will support you. 💖

Well done to all the gang in Cobh Tri who completed the 70.3 and the 140.6 on the Sunday. You guys keep me motivated. Some club for one club.

Massive well done also to Tony and Katie for conquering the 70.3

Well done to the Ironman of the family who placed 8th in his age category in the full on Sunday. No bluffing, no excuses, you get it done. He also done my training plan. No missing a training session without him knowing 🤣 To also witness Jess winning her category and Chris tearing up the course was something else.

A fantastic weekend topped off with fireworks courtesy of Cobh Peoples Regatta.

Too many people to thank individually but you'll get an idea from the pics.

Damien I love you and Mam there's no mother like you. Thank you. My employers and gang at Coral Leisure Cobh make training so much easier. I'm lucky to have a regional Manager who drives me to be better. David, thank you.

What's next you ask? I start back training and head to Portugal in 9 weeks time to take on the 140.6. Drop a few kgs with the help of Niall and put in the performance of my life.

Thanks to you all for the messages and posts of congratulations. However insignificant you might think a like or a comment is I can assure you it's extremely significant to me.

Onto Portugal I go, over and 0ut. 💖

Note from App C0-Ordinator

I have been involved in sport at every level for over 50 years, competitor, administrator, coach to number out Irish champions and International and 3 olympians, Irish athletics team manager, journalist, founder of the Imokilly People, Cobh News, Editor of Irelands athletics magazine "Marathon" for over 20 years, founder of Peil a national magazine for ladies Football, present at 8 Olympics 10 world championships and many other International events in many sports. My most recent adventure was the investment with the help of Cobh Credit Union in founding of the Xplore Local Cobh App. My main motivation in doing this was to give publicity as soon as possible to as many events as possible in Cobh and the Great island. The most difficult aspect is to find people, groups and organisations to contribute news and stories of merit. The App provides this and I must say of my life time experience, I got goose bumps when I read Ber's fantastic story, told with realism and passion. We need stories like this fascinating one, from many more people. I assure you you the App provides the facility for this.

Huge contribution

Ber has made a huge contribution to the Great Island in her role as manager of Coral Leisure, she mentions the value of sponsorship in her article. Let me add any time I approached Ber, for support for promising young athletes and sports people she never refused. When I was producing the hard copy every 2nd week of Cobh News Magazine, she came up trumps in sponsoring the Monthly Sports award. Just look at what some of the early recipients have achieved since. Timmy Wilk Cork Minor hurler and captain, Kate Gardiner Senior Tennis International. Again she had no hesitation when approached early in the year to revive the sponsorship. The first recipient Callum Walsh, one of the most exciting boxers and martial arts competitors in the world. Amy Duggan star of the Irish under 18 basketball team at the recent European Championships in Bulgaria. We have not got round yet to presenting awards, to 2 more most deserving nominees, Jess Bruton who has qualified for the world Ironman Triathlon at Kona in Hawaii and winner in Youghal this pass weekend. It's 2nd time round for Kate Gardiner who represented Ireland in the Billy Jean King federation cup Tennis in Africa.

If there was anyone more entitled to an award after her exploits it would be Ber Rowe herself. Continue you meteoric rise due to your dedication and hard grafting, you have much more to achieve you are such an inspiration to so many people in a world and at time that needs inspiration.

Thank you Ber

Fr Liam

Thanks to Cobh Credit Union

Cobh Tri Club would like to thank Liam O' Doherty, CEO and Cobh Credit Union for their generous sponsorship of the Jailbreak Triathlon on Saturday 20th August. It is very difficult to run events like this without sponsorship and we truly appreciate the support of the Credit Union as we prepare to welcome Jailbreak back to the town after 3 years.

Pictured with Liam at the sponsorship launch earlier are Nichola Power, Race Director and Micheál O' Driscoll, Treasurer, Cobh Triathlon Club

Jailbreak Triathlon

undefined

Jailbreak Triathlon simply wouldn't happen without the continued support of the Port of Cork. There are a lot of logistics involved when you want over 300 people to swim across a busy, opened shipping channel in a harbour like ours! Port of Cork are consistent in their support of Cobh Tri Club but for Jailbreak in particular we wish to thank them!

@ballymorecobhac You are an Ironman!!

Cork Jobs: Rates of pay and duties as call put out for Retained Firefighters for Cobh

The council is recruiting new members in Cobh to join the hundreds of retained firefighters in service with the Cork County Fire Service

A retained fire service is one where part-time staff living locally mobilise to any emergency calls. Their wages are calculated by the number of calls they take.

GAA Hurling under 15

U15 championship hurling

Cobh 3-17 Erin's own 1-15

Another absolute classic by two very committed hurling teams. It's the third meeting with both winning one each coming into tonights game. First twenty minutes was like a sparring match with both sides having a good look at each other and it was Erins own who were coming on on top with points from Jack McGrath Ryan Dinnen with 4 and an excellent score from Tom Oriordan to lead 6-3 with Evan Cummins Alex Finnagen and Jason Cotter popping over for Cobh. Cummins, Cotter and Maciej Krwazyc had Cobh ahead by a point coming up to halftime. Ryan got Erins own next score after Rory Cullinane and Ronan Murray set him up. But with all Erins own dominance in first half with the wind it was Cobh who went pulled away with points from Sam Collins Rian Barry and Jason cotter and 3 goals from Evan Cummins

Cobh went on to dominate the second half with an outstanding team performance collectively by all the Cobh team, Donnacha Leahy was superb in goals standing In for Noah Doherty who is out injured for the season.Erin's own couldn't close the gap and cobh deserved their win with Ryan Dineen finding the net with seconds remaining. Very exciting game with plenty skills on display.

NEW EXHIBITION - Marie Brett: Yes, But Do You Care?

undefined

The Irish, Cork County-based artist Marie Brett’s film Yes, But Do You Care? (2021) examines the politics of care in the Irish context. The work premiered at the Irish Museum of Modern Art in July 2022 and is part of the National Collection.

Yes, But Do You Care? responds to the shift in legislation from the (problematically termed) Lunacy Act of 1822 to the Assisted Decision-Making (Capacity) Act of 2015. The new law redefines the relationship between the carer and the person being cared for in matters of mental capacity. Brett made the work in collaboration with the dancer Philip Connaughton and members of the Irish advocacy group Dementia Carers Campaign Network.

This exhibition complements The Hidden Mountain, the Fort and the Five Trees, Brett’s first survey show, which SIRIUS is presenting in different iterations across 2022. These exhibitions facilitate a critical review of Brett’s practice, repositioning and furthering her idiosyncratic voice and style within the Irish art scene.

Curated by Miguel Amado, director of SIRIUS.

Produced by SIRIUS.

Launch: 27 August.

On view until 15 October.
