<p>With the glorious weather we have decided to have our opening ceremony in the Promenade this evening from 8pm. We will have Cobh Drama School and our Regatta Queen contestant interviews followed by DJ Flea on the bandstand. All welcome.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Be sure to pop into visit St. Colman’s Cathedral if you are in Cobh this weekend and the fireworks always look spectacular from our terrace.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As we approach the National Heritage Week, I am paying homage to one of the lesser-seen heritage features of SIRIUS, the tiled basement floor. I love Victorian encaustic tiles. You can find them in old religious and public buildings, shop fronts and even old pubs, usually from the mid-19th century. Victorian or Edwardian tiles line hallways, garden pathways and conservatories and are a regular sight in Dublin and Cork City townhouses.&nbsp;</p>
<p>These hard-wearing, practical but beautiful geometric styles became popular during the 19th century Gothic Revival, when there was a growing interest in medieval architecture. As the best example of a Victorian town in Ireland, Cobh is full of interesting architectural features, and this inlaid tiling is one of the most distinctive, whether it is original, repaired or replicated.&nbsp;</p>
<p>According to the Victoria &amp; Albert Museum: “Medieval inlaid tiles were decorated by stamping the clay with a carved wooden block. The indentations were then filled with white pipe clay. In the 19th century, these tiles were called 'encaustic'. Today the term normally refers to Victorian inlaid tiles. These were made in a similar way, but instead of stamping the design into the tile, the clay was pressed into a mould with the design in relief at the bottom. Once the tile was removed from the mould, the indentations could be filled with a contrasting clay. Mechanised processes using powdered clay to form the tile body and inlaid design were also used by some manufacturers.”&nbsp;</p>
<p>Here is a selection of photos I have taken from SIRIUS and around Cobh. You might recognise the entrances if you walk down Westbourne Place and West Beach.&nbsp;</p>
<p>On Saturday, 20 August, from 2-3pm, I am giving a free tour of SIRIUS as part of the National Heritage Week. I would love to hear from others regarding which architectural features you like most about the building and Cobh.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Presidents Prize this week end is the exact same rules as the Captains except it’s stableford off the white markers , you can re enter but only your first card counts for first prize , re entries are applied to all other prizes , as with Captains no practicing allowed on the course.</p>
