Next to the old Town Hall /Clock Tower is a memorial to the Cork Harbour Tragedy. The plaque commemorates the five lives lost in an accident whereby two boats collided and sank in 1942. The only survivor, who swam to Spike Island was guided by the lighthouse on the spit bank. Visible if you look out the harbour to the left side of the Clock Tower. The lighthouse itself was designed by George Halpin and built by Irish engineer Alexander Mitchell who was in fact blind.
