The Demesne is at the heart of the town and was once home to the Sandford family who were granted the land during Penal times. The Sandford estate was acquired by the Land Commission and the Congested Districts Board in the early 20th Century. The Demesne in which it was set survives today as a beautiful park enjoyed by the people of Castlerea and its visitors. It connects the town from all directions with so much to explore. Stroll through the mature woodland, past the Fairy Village & Acoustic Playpark, cross the Cast Iron Foot Bridge and watch the River Francis travel through the original Weir and Sluice gates (erected c.1920 in association with Castlerea’s former steam sawmill).
