The Demesne

The Demesne is a historic park located in the heart of Castlerea town. It was once home to the Sandford family, who were granted land in Castlerea during penal times. They owned a distillery in the town and built a large country house within the Demense. The family maintained power and prestige in the town until the 19th century. The Demesne is an exceptionally scenic part of Castlerea, as it is set along the Suck Valley Way. A riverside walk takes you to the memorial site of Cindy the Elephant and the historic Clonalis woods. The majestic Clonalis House will also be visible as you near the end of your walk through the park.
