This former prison, built c.1820, is now in use as a house, with a 1940s garage to the front. There are surviving features, which stand as evidence of its former use as a jail, such as the cast-iron bars to the lunette windows. Located in the Market Square among other prestigious buildings in the town, this building was known as "The Old Bridewell Prison". It is said there was once an underground passageway connecting this Prison, The Courthouse and the old Police station on Barracks Street.
