Sir William Wilde was born in 1815, in Castlerea, Co Roscommon, the third of three sons, living in an end of terrace house in Barrack Street (now named ‘The Oscar’. Wilde was an otolaryngologist and ophthalmologist, as well as an author of significant works on medicine, archaeology and folklore, particularly concerning his native Ireland. He was the father of famous playwright and novelist Oscar Wilde. The Wilde family burial vault is located in Holy Trinity Cemetery, which in turn, is located to the left of the main access road to The Demesne.
