Keem Bay in Achill, Ireland has been named the number one 'wild swimming spot' in the British and Irish Isles. The research was conducted by Ocean Bottle, a UK-based reusable bottle company, by cross-referencing government data on water quality with Google user-submitted ratings and reviews. The results showed that Keem Bay had a 20 water cleanliness score based on the count of E.coli and Enterococci per 100ml, and an average rating of 4.9.
The news of Keem Bay's ranking comes as the beach was featured in the official poster for the Martin McDonagh film 'The Banshees of Inisherin'. The movie was filmed on location in Achill and Galway in the autumn of 2021 and is set to release in October 2022. The poster features two of the film's stars, Brendan Gleeson and Colin Farrell, looking out over the Minaun Cliffs from the white sands of Keem beach.
Keem Bay's ranking has put it ahead of other popular wild swimming spots such as Barafundle Bay, Mwent Beach and Marloes Sands in Wales, and Upton Towans in Cornwall. Galway's Trá an Dóilín was sixth, with Donegal's Dooey Beach also making the top ten. With its stunning scenery, perfect water quality and ideal location, Keem Bay is certainly a wild swimming gem worth exploring.
