Achill Island's Keem Bay has been included in a prestigious new book from Lonely Planet, 'Best Beaches: 100 of the World’s Most Incredible Beaches'. Keem was the only Irish beach to be included in the publication. Writing about Keem, Lonely Planet says: 'sloping green hillsides spill down to a deep-set horseshoe bay, where a Blue-Flag delight of a pale-blonde beach sits framed by the Croaghaun Cliffs – Ireland’s highest sea cliffs – and the thundering moody-blue Atlantic'. It describes the journey to Keem as a 'vertiginous yet jaw-droppingly beautiful 8km drive from Keel village'.
Speaking to Mid West Radio, Chris McCarthy, Manager of Achill Tourism, echoed this sentiment. He said, 'that journalist is correct in writing about the drive to it – it’s as breathtaking as down on the beach itself'. Commenting on how Keem's inclusion on the list is duly deserved, he continued, 'when you’re down there, there’s something really special about Keem, you’re just surrounded by your thoughts and mountains and the wild Atlantic in front of you. Its a place where dreams and memories are made of. We’re just delighted to be able to promote it once again.'
Miriam Kennedy, Head of the Wild Atlantic Way with Fáilte Ireland, says she is delighted to see Keem Bay take a “well-deserved place on the Lonely Planet top 100 beaches in the world". Quoted in The Irish Times, she said, "Keem Bay is a magnificent natural asset enjoyed by locals and visitors alike and represents the true essence of the Wild Atlantic Way – breathtaking in its wild beauty".
Keem Bay is one of five Blue Flag beaches on Achill Island, and the jewel in the crown of Achill's 'Atlantic Drive' which takes in all five beaches as well as stunning seascapes and cliffs.
