The 2023 Heinrich Böll Memorial Weekend takes place on Achill Island from Thursday 27th April to Sunday 30th April.
This popular arts weekend commemorates the German writer Heinrich Böll who lived and worked on Achill in the 1960s after publishing an account of his journey across Ireland and arrival in Achill in 1957. As part of Böll's legacy to the people of Achill, his cottage in Dugort is now a retreat for artists and writers as well as this annual arts festival event.
The 2023 event features numerous speakers and panelists including: poet Nessa O'Mahony; poet Moya Cannon; writer and poet Geraldine Mitchell; poet Mary O'Malley; harpist Laoise Kelly; Cord Meier-Klodt, German Ambassador to Ireland; environmentalist and wildlife expert Micheál Ó Briain; poet Art Ó Súilleabháin; ecologist Pádraic Fogarty; Jan Philipp Albrecht of the Heinrich Böll Foundation; environmentalist Saoirse McHugh; poet Seán Lysaght; writer Judith Mok; writer Roman Ehrlich; Professor Kerstin Mey, President of University of Limerick; Gisela Holfter, joint-director of the Centre for Irish-German Studies; poet Sujata Bhatt; poet, writer and artist Michael Augustin; writer Michael O’Loughlin; archaeologist Eoin Halpin; sculptor, farmer and rewilder Eoghan Daltun; readings from the Achill Writers Group and music from Laoise Kelly, Diarmuid Gielty and John Butler.
