Actor Colin Farrell, one of the stars of the movie The Banshees of Inisherin which was shot largely on location on Achill Island, has been awarded ‘Best Actor’ for this role at the Venice Film Festival. The inaugural screening of the movie at the festival was followed by a 13-minute standing ovation, the longest for any film at the prestigious event. The response, described by Variety magazine as the “longest and loudest reception” of any film at this year’s festival, prompted speculation that Farrell could receive his first-ever Oscar nomination for his role.
The award was collected on behalf of Farrell by Martin McDonagh, writer and director of the film. Speaking via video, Farrell said, “I’m shocked to get this and thrilled”.
The Banshees of Inisherin was filmed at a number of locations on Achill Island in late summer 2021, after also filming some scenes on Inis Mór, one of the Aran Islands of Co. Galway. Its Irish release on 21st October is hotly anticipated, not least by the scores of locals who worked as extras on the movie.
