Back by popular demand! Europe’s only circus science festival returns to venues in Achill and other parts of County Mayo in November 2024. The activities take place from Friday 15th to Sunday 17th November and the event is supported by Science Foundation Ireland. This year the event has partnered with Mayo Autism to bring two special performances, and includes a post-show discussion of women in STEM.

Achill Tourism will again host a Bewley’s Big Coffee Morning Social for Hospice event, on Friday 25th October. Last year’s event raised almost €2,000 for Mayo-Roscommon Hospice and we hope 2024 will be just as successful. Join us at Achill Tourism HQ, next to the Post Office in Achill Sound, from 10am to 2pm.

As well as teas and coffees there will be a selection of home-baked cakes, buns and other treats. Come along and say hello, have the craic, and help raise funds for this worthwhile cause.

Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation was founded in 1992. Before the Foundation was established there were no specialist services for terminally ill patients in Mayo and Roscommon. People were often sent home from the hospital and many suffered difficult and painful deaths.  In 1992, thanks to the foresight and dedication of a small group of people, the Foundation was established as a voluntary organisation to help provide Hospice/Palliative Care Services in the two Counties.

Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation agreed to work in association with the Western Health Board (now HSE West) in an effort to meet the Service needs. The Service covers an area of 3,143 sq. miles with a population of 194,000 (Mayo approx. 130,000 and Roscommon 64,000).  The Foundation, with the loyal support of the public, continues to fund the service in association with HSE West. Every year we fund approx 50% of the existing Service costs and to build two Hospices in Mayo and Roscommon.

In 2019 the Mayo Hospice was completed at a cost of €9m, all of which came from fundraised income. We will continue to fund services within the Mayo Hospice through fundraising.

The 2024 Achill Half Marathon and 10K is close to selling out. As of today (13th February), only 77 places remain available for the Half Marathon and 60 for the 10K. Any runners still undecided whether to commit are urged to register now – Register for 2024 Achill Half Marathon & 10K. 

This popular running event takes place on Saturday 6th July with the start and finish at Keel, next to the beach. Honoured as Ireland’s ‘Most Scenic Route’ and ‘Best Half Marathon’ by Run Ireland magazine, the Half Marathon route offers a challenge even to elite runners, with an elevation gain of 212m and frequent winds direct from the Atlantic.

After the race, the pristine Atlantic waters at Keel Beach adjacent to the finish line offer a soothing relief for runners. There is also a beach side mobile sauna in Keel, and no fewer than three seaweed baths in the Achill area for relaxation of aching muscles. The official opening of the Slievemore Heritage Trail on Achill Island takes place on Friday 16th February 2024. Minister Dara Calleary will open this new resource which aims provides interactive interpretation of an area rich in history. The trail covers an area approximately 3km in length and includes megalithic portal and court tombs as well as the famous Deserted Village. An app has been developed which, along with QR codes attached to strategically placed posts, will allow the visitor to access information and stories about each site as they walk through the trail. The app is live on both Google Play and the Apple Store, just search for ‘Slievemore Heritage Trail’.

The official opening begins at 3pm at the Deserted Village, with a reception in Keel Hall to follow. Attendance is free but please RSVP to catherine@achilltourism.com.

Achill Island's Keem Bay has been included in a prestigious new book from Lonely Planet, 'Best Beaches: 100 of the World’s Most Incredible Beaches'. Keem was the only Irish beach to be included in the publication. Writing about Keem, Lonely Planet says: 'sloping green hillsides spill down to a deep-set horseshoe bay, where a Blue-Flag delight of a pale-blonde beach sits framed by the Croaghaun Cliffs – Ireland’s highest sea cliffs – and the thundering moody-blue Atlantic'. It describes the journey to Keem as a 'vertiginous yet jaw-droppingly beautiful 8km drive from Keel village'.

Speaking to Mid West Radio, Chris McCarthy, Manager of Achill Tourism, echoed this sentiment. He said, 'that journalist is correct in writing about the drive to it – it’s as breathtaking as down on the beach itself'. Commenting on how Keem's inclusion on the list is duly deserved, he continued, 'when you’re down there, there’s something really special about Keem, you’re just surrounded by your thoughts and mountains and the wild Atlantic in front of you. Its a place where dreams and memories are made of. We’re just delighted to be able to promote it once again.'

Miriam Kennedy, Head of the Wild Atlantic Way with Fáilte Ireland, says she is delighted to see Keem Bay take a “well-deserved place on the Lonely Planet top 100 beaches in the world". Quoted in The Irish Times, she said, "Keem Bay is a magnificent natural asset enjoyed by locals and visitors alike and represents the true essence of the Wild Atlantic Way – breathtaking in its wild beauty".

Roll up! Roll up! The circus is coming to the sea! Details have been announced of this year’s Circus Science by the Sea festival in Achill and other parts of County Mayo. The activities take place from Friday 17th to Sunday 19th November and are part of the national Science Week event.

Circus Science by the Sea 2023

The newly opened Great Western Greenway extension on Achill Island has become the first Greenway in Ireland to get an eco-powered defibrillator cabinet. The new installation at Saula is solar powered and contains a defibrillator along with other medical equipment. The cabinet itself is made from high-grade 316 stainless steel to help protect against corrosion in a coastal location such as Achill.

In addition to powering potentially life-saving equipment such as the defibrillator and other cardiac medication, the Eco-Powered Cabinet can be used for other purposes such as footfall counters, flood sensors on river banks, and even CCTV.

It was developed and installed by Claremorris-based Eco Powered Cabinets and funded by Mayo County Council. The unveiling of the new cabinet was attended by Darren Forde of EPC; Anna Connor, Tourism Development Officer at Mayo County Council; Karen Duggan on behalf of The Achill Defib committee (and on behalf of Dr. Noreen Lineen-Curtis); and Chris McCarthy, Manager of Achill Tourism.

The Wavecrest Hotel in Dooagh will host a launch party for the new album 'Chongie Road' by local musician Séan Lynch. The event takes place on Saturday 23rd September with doors open for 7.30pm for customers to watch the Ireland vs South Africa World Cup rugby clash before the album launch.

As well as showcasing the music of uileann piper Seán Lynch, the event will also launch a fundraising drive as part of September's Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Three worthy charitable causes will be supported on the night: St. John's Ward, Crumlin; Aoibheann's Pink Tie; and local charity Gearóid's Smile.

The evening promises to be an exhilarating mix of music, community and charity, with special guests and Achill musicians including The Achill Lads, Bríd McLoughlin and Aoife Fadian. Tickets priced €10 can be purchased from Achill Tourism's Keel information office, outlets across Achill, and a limited number will be available on the door.

Author Martina Murphy was in Achill recently to launch 'The Reckoning', the third in her series of DS Lucy Golden crime thrillers set on Achill Island. The story follows the investigation into the discovery of a body in a house in Dugort and, as with the previous novels 'The Night Caller' and 'The Branded', it is a real page-turner.

Martina called in to the Achill Tourism offices at Achill Sound to sign copies of her books. She revealed that a fourth installment has already been written, and that there has been interest in the series from TV production companies.

Full details of the 2023 Féile Chill Damhnait / Kildownet Festival have been announced, and its a bumper festival! Running over 12 days from 9th to 20th August, it features fascinating talks, fantastic shows and live music, guided walks, an ever-popular Ladies Day, and a fun-filled Family Day.&nbsp;
