The Great Western Greenway

Escape the bustle of urban life on the 42km* Great Western Greenway, the longest off-road walking and cycling trail in Ireland. The World Class Great Western Greenway is a trac free cycling and walking trail which follows the route of the renowned Westport to Achill railway which closed in 1937. The Achill end of the Greenway starts at Achill Sound. In 2011 the Great Western Greenway was awarded the EDEN European Destination of Excellence Award for Sustainable Tourism. This development has been made possible by agreement of local landowners who have allowed permissive access to users to pass through their lands. Please be mindful of this. The route offers gentle gradients and some of the most idyllic scenery in the west of Ireland. The route also forms part of the National Cycle Network and it is the longest off road cycling experience in the Country. *now 47km! A new 5km extension from Achill Sound to Cashel was opened in 2023.
